LORRAINE WHELAN : PER CENT FOR ART COMMISSION, ENNISCORTHY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL : 2008

Gorse
Community Hospital, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford
2008

Under the Per Cent for Art scheme, this piece was commissioned by the Health Service Executive after a 2-stage competition.

The hospital is set on the outskirts of Enniscorthy, amid rural countryside and mainly caters to the aged, with long-term occupants. The commissioner specifically asked for works of art which were brightly coloured, with resonance for the hospital clients, and which required minimal maintenance.

Having worked with flower imagery previously (see Blessings work), I proposed a mosaic depicting a close-up view of gorse, a wild shrub which grows as hedgerows throughout Ireland and would be a familiar sight to anyone with an Irish rural background. The mosaic was created using coloured glass affixed to marine ply. It was then installed directly into a wall at the hospital.
